Kerala Battles Heavy Rain, Floods and Landslides as Monsoon Intensifies
Kerala is facing one of its most severe monsoon spells of 2026, with continuous heavy rainfall causing floods, landslides, overflowing rivers, and widespread disruption across several districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts for multiple districts, warning that more heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over the coming days.
What Happened?
Heavy rainfall began intensifying at the end of July and continued into early August as the southwest monsoon strengthened over Kerala. Some areas in central and southern Kerala recorded exceptionally high rainfall, leading to flash floods and landslides. Rivers overflowed, inundating homes, roads, and agricultural land.

- Kottayam
- Idukki
- Alappuzha
- Kozhikode

- Kannur
Government Response
The Kerala government has placed emergency services on high alert and directed district administrations to monitor vulnerable areas continuously. Disaster management teams are coordinating rescue efforts, monitoring river levels, and preparing additional relief camps if rainfall continues.
